Max Scherzer improves to 9-0, Tigers beat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Max Scherzer won his ninth straight decision, and the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City 3-2 to snap the Royals' six-game winning streak on Tuesday night.

Scherzer became the first Tigers starter to begin the season 9-0 since Vern Kennedy in 1938 by pitching seven sharp innings.

He limited the Royals to three hits and two runs, while striking out six and walking two.

Aaron Crow (2-2), who was a college teammate of Scherzer's at Missouri, took the loss after pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh.

Crow hit Miguel Cabrera with a pitch to start the eighth. Cabrera advanced to third on Prince Fielder's single to right on a full count and scored on Victor Martinez's sacrifice fly to left. That was the first run allowed by the Kansas City bullpen in 21 innings.

New construction projects start Monday

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Construction season is in full swing, some current projects are causing back-ups and several more are about to begin on Monday.

Plainfield Avenue from I-96 to 5 Mile Road is smooth moving now but come Monday a resurfacing project will be underway. Leaving owners at A Davis Brown Salon worried about the bottom line.

"People's frustration rise with the construction we currently have," says salon owner Erin Brown.  "I think what it will do is effect our schedules, people are not going to want to come after work because the traffic is more heavy."

The corridior on 28th Street is almost half way through its season long project that has lanes shut down. Soon the eastbound lanes will be completed and traffic will be shifted onto those lanes. All the changes and back-ups have drivers like Michael Isabell avoiding the area.

Griffins beat Crunch, 3-1 in game 1 of Finals

SYRACUSE, NY (WZZM) - Despite being outshot 28-21, The Grand Rapids Griffins managed to draw first blood in the Calder Cup Finals series against the Syracuse Crunch.

Griffins won game one Saturday night in Syracuse, 3-1.

Grand Rapids got a first period goal from Mitch Callahan, which stood up into the 3rd period when Riley Sheehan lit the lamp to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

Less than 2 minutes later, the Crunch countered. J.P. Cote uncorked a 75-foot wrister that Petr Mrazek never saw.

The Griffins once again found themselves nursing a one goal lead at 2-1.

With under a minute to play, Syracuse pulled its goaltender to add an extra skater, but the Griffins managed to get control of the puck and Gustav Nyquist tallied an empty-net goal, sealing the win for the Griffins.

Grand Rapids now has a 1-game-to-none lead in the series.

Game two is Sunday night in Syracuse beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Uniting the deaf and hard of hearing community

BYRON CENTER, Mich. (WZZM) -- Advocates for the deaf and hard of hearing community say services have been cut deeply in Michigan in the last three years, making it ever more important for them to support each other.

They did that at the 18th Annual Silent Celebration in Byron Center Saturday. An estimated 250 people from across the state gathered for a picnic and games. Participants say this is one of the only events in Michigan, so many make the trip.

"There's a lot of businesses, institutions, companies that don't provide communication for deaf and hard of hearing individuals so they're drastically underserved, just socially even," said Beverly Chesebro, a long-time event participant and active member in the deaf community.
