Forest Hills Central students dominate at DECA district competition

CASCADE, Mich. (WZZM) - In early January, several students from Forest Hills Central High School participated in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) district competition which was held at Ferris State University in Big Rapids.

FHC participants hauled in 40 medals at the competition.

The students were judged based on combined scores from writing an objective business and marketing test and solving business marketing case problems.

In addition, 19 FHC students will advance to state level competition which is scheduled for March 18-20.

Cascade Township approves Meijer changes to out-lot plans

Cascade Township approves Meijer changes to out-lot plans

CASCADE, Mich. (WZZM) - Changes are coming to the outlots at the Meijer store at Kraft Avenue and 28th Street. Cascade Township has put its approval on proposed changes to the plan that was approved in 2008.

The latest change has kept developers and planning commissioners working for the past calendar year. It calls for elimination of a strip mall and makes way for three smaller buildings.

Township officials say plans are in place for a Wendy's restaurant and another retail building, which will include a Qdoba restaurant, with space for an additional retailer.

Officials add that when developers have specifics for the third building, they will need to go back to the township Planning Commission with their plans.

Cascade planning director, Steve Patterson says the amendments to the PUD are minor. Reducing the square footage of the building footprints and providing some improvement to traffic movement will be the key elements.

Blizzard 2011 - Morning commute from Cascade to Walker

CASCADE, MI (WZZM) - How bad were the roads this morning? That question will be asked over and over again in West Michigan.

The answer? It depended on where you live. I live in Cascade Township. It normally takes me 17 minutes to get to work. I decided to video tape my commute this morning, so I used duck tape to fasten my home video camera to the dashboard of my husband's pick-up truck. Here's my video of this morning's commute.

Park Benches - Coming soon to the open space parks

Park Benches - Coming soon to the open space parks

From: Cascade Charter Township Manager's Blog

The Township will soon make a decision on the style of benches to install in the Peace and Burton Parks. Benches will be placed along the trail from the parking lots uphill to the “meadow” area in Peace Park so those in need of a break while traversing the hills will have a place to sit. Benches will be installed in a few areas of Burton Park so visitors can enjoy the solitude of the park during a walk.

The benches will be able to be purchased by a resident and marked as a memorial for a loved one with the placement of a plaque or engraving on a bench. The cost of the benches has not been finalized, but will most likely be in the $400 - $1,000 range. Call the office at 949-1500 if you are interested in purchasing a memorial bench in honor of a loved one.

Reception: Thursday, February 10, 2011, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the lobby. The Nate Roberts Quartet performing. Everyone is welcome!

A portion of a barn, a row of windows, apples on the ground…Photographer Ken Kolker’s simple photographic images intrigue the imagination into considering what lies beyond the immediate view. “I’m always wondering what’s around the bend,” he says. “My photographs tend to raise the question of what comes next.”

Kolker has a curiosity that comes naturally––in the news business since 1979, he has spent his entire career inquiring and discovering. Whether reporting or taking photographs, he always keeps his eyes open and pays particular attention to specifics. “You need to look at the broad view, but the details tell the story,” he says.
