GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich.—If you can’t escape to a warmer place this spring break, just head to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, where the Butterflies Are Blooming, and so are the opportunities for fun.

Now through April 30, visit the balmy Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory where more than 7,000 butterflies from Africa, Asia, South America and Central America mature and  fly freely among the tropical plants. Butterflies Are Blooming is the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition in the nation.

“Where else in the Midwest can you walk into a 15 thousand square-foot tropical environment and be instantly immersed in warm temperatures and thousands of exotic butterflies?” asked Steve LaWarre, director of horticulture. “This exhibition gives you the opportunity to experience something different—a taste of the tropics and special winged visitors-- right here in West Michigan.”

The conservatory’s temperature is kept at 85 degrees and 70 percent humidity, perfect for the butterflies to thrive.  Each year, Butterflies Are Blooming attracts more than 150,000 visitors from all over the nation.

There are also plenty of activities for children on spring break.  On Tuesday nights, visitors are encouraged to bring their flashlights to see the nightlife in the Tropical Conservatory. “Tuesday Night Lights” runs until 9 p.m.

Also, now through Wednesday, April 30, young visitors are invited to visit the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden for activities including flying like a butterfly in life cycle costumes, performing butterfly puppet shows, reading butterfly story books or hunting for Michigan butterfly replicas in the Treehouse Village. Activities vary each day, so check with the information center to find out what exactly is happening the day you visit.
