Chamber prepares for the annual end of summer event

Wyoming-Kentwood, MI (January 12, 2011) – The annual event has grown through the years to over 300,000 visitors and over 15,000 vehicles. Last year, with beautiful weather, the event hosted record breaking numbers. Organizers are looking for an even larger turnout this year. There has been momentum within the 28th Street merchants’ community to increase event participation. Many of the businesses are reaching out to the visitors and welcoming them with specials, activities and event oriented activities. The Metro Cruise® was started as a method of helping businesses along the 28th Street corridor when highway M-6 opened.

This year’s venues are currently under development.

New exhibit opens at Forest Hills Fine Arts Center

The Forest Hills Fine Art Center "artist in residence" program features the work of Kathleen Kalinowski beginning today (January 6).  Kalinowski explores the nuances of nature in colorful, harmonious pastels and oil paint.  “My life is rooted in the landscape around me, where I live on the land my great-grandparents farmed 80 years ago,” Kalinowski says. “Whether it’s the sun coming into day over a field, or the reflections of a wandering stream, I look for contrasts in nature where colors seem to vibrate against one another.”

You may meet the artist at a reception on Thursday, January 13 6pm-7:30pm in the lobby of the Fire Arts Center, which is at 600 Forest Hill Avenue SE.  David Pickel will be performing.

Kalinowski's exhibit runs through January 26.

The title of their newest album says it all – VocalPlay. A cappella is defined as singing without instruments. Vocal Play is singing as instruments – such as drums, guitars, horns, flutes – just to name a few. With humble beginnings in New York City, their unique sound now takes them around the world. Widely known in countries such as France, Belgium, South Africa and Portugal, they have hit the single charts in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy and have appeared as special guests on Michael Bublé’s Crazy Love World Tour. Their phenomenal talent coupled with their incredible stage presence deliver a live show that many consider to be one of the best in the world! Naturally 7 is destined to change the sound of a cappella music forever.

Naturally 7 is the fourth event of our 2010-2011 Performance Season.

VSA Michigan exhibit at Forest Hills Fine Arts Center ends Friday

There are just two days left to check out the VSA Michigan exhibit at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center. The exhibit showcases the talent of more than 30 local student artists from the Kent Intermediate School District.

“Our artists have such a wonderful vision of the world and an important perspective to offer,” says Katie Timmermans, VSA program director. “With art, everyone’s voice matters. Art celebrates diversity and encourages each artist to tell his or her story. Partnering with the Fine Arts Center to share these stories is a wonderful opportunity. We hope community members enjoy experiencing the art as much as we enjoyed creating it.”

Each year, VSA provides art programs and activities in the visual arts, music, dance and drama to more than 4,000 children, youth and adults from throughout Kent and Ottawa County.
