My Town: Dozens of companies hiring at Veterans Job Fair May 16

MUSKEGON, Mich.—Approximately 90 businesses will be looking for employees during the Muskegon Veterans Job Fair this Friday, May 16.

The hiring event will take place on the U.S.S. LST 393 Veterans Museum Ship, docked at 560 Mart Street in Muskegon.  This is the third year for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Job openings range from engineering to grocery store cashiers.  Participating businesses include:

HOLLAND, Mich.--  New Holland Brewing Co.’s newest brew pays tribute to the Michigan company, Carhartt.

The Dearborn-based business tapped New Holland to create a brew to celebrate the clothing company’s 125th anniversary, as well as salute the hard-working people who wear the brand. 

The Carhartt Woodsman will debut at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado Oct. 2-4.  The session-strength pale ale is barrel aged and brewed using hops grown in Cascade, giving it a unique taste.  Its name is tied to the tin man from the Wizard of Oz, which legend has it, was written in Holland by L. Frank Baum in 1899, when Carhartt was already ten years old.

CASCADE, Mich.--  A Grand Rapids area store is being honored by Elle Magazine.

The publication has selected A.K. Rikk’s as its top shop for the May 2014 magazine.

A.K. Rikk’s was founded in 1986 by Richard Gaby. It offers designer clothing from Alexander Wang, Rick Owens Dark Shadow, Valentino, Salvatore Ferragamo and more.  

A.K. Rikk’s moved to its 28,000 square-foot home at 6303 28th Street SE in 2012.   The store features a large patio and green space, which will be where the 2014 Runway for Charity Fashion Show on Saturday, May 31 to benefit Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—If you’re looking for a clean, safe place to dine out this weekend, the Kent County Health Department has some suggestions- 471 of them, actually.

The KCHD recently announced the winners of its 2nd annual Food Safety Awards.  This year’s 471 winners were selected from more than 1700 licensed facilities that were inspected through 2013.    To qualify, each establishment had to meet the following criteria:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Expect long lines outside Grand Rapids' four museums, as the  “Museums Free 4 All” returns May 4.

Amway is once again covering the cost of admission for families to the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, the Grand Rapids Public Museum and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.  Participants can also jump on a free shuttle to travel to and from each museum. 

Amway will also be hosting fun, family-friendly activities outside the GRAM.  People who get their “passport” stamped at all four museums will also have a chance to win prizes.

My Town: Outdoor Farmer's Market to feature more than 50 vendors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— The Outdoor Farmer’s Market in downtown Grand Rapids will open for its second season this weekend.

Grand Rapids Downtown Market says the new season of outdoor shopping will start Saturday May 3.  The outdoor market will be open every Saturday in May, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The market will host its inaugural “Chefs at The Market” demonstration at 10 a.m.  A chef will showcase simple recipes you can follow using food available at the market.  This weekend’s demonstration will feature rhubarb.

Inside the market, visitors can take part in a free yoga session and enjoy live jazz music by Hugh DeWitt.  At noon, shoppers can also enjoy microgreens grown in the market’s greenhouse as part of a $5 tasting bar.

My Town: Three companies get grants to create 458 new jobs locally

LANSING, Mich. (WZZM)—Three companies are getting state funding to expand in West Michigan, generating more than $52 million in investments and creating up to 458 new jobs.

NOVO 1, which already has a customer call center in Holland, plans to open a new center in Cascade Township.  The company will invest $1.5 million, creating up to 287 jobs over three years.  The Michigan Economic Development Corporation awarded NOVO1 a $550,000 grant for the expansion Wednesday.   People interested in a position with NOVO1 should call (616) 834-9700 or visit www.novo1.com
