Bonsai trees aplenty at Frederik Meijer Gardens this weekend

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich.—A miniature tree that’s been cultivated for nearly 2,000 years will be the center of attention at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park this weekend.

The annual Fall Bonsai Show is Saturday, October 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the main building.  Admission is free.

The show will feature a collection of stylized Bonsai, as well as supplies for sale and demonstrations on how to cultivate and care for these dwarf trees by the West Michigan Bonsai Club.

Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is located at 1000 E. Beltline Ave. NE in Grand Rapids Township.

Roselle Park River Festival: Come for the run, stay for the fun!

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich.—Ada Township’s Parks & Recreation Department is bringing back the Grand River-Run for the Roselle Park River Festival Saturday, September 28.

This is the second year for the run.  Participants can chose to participate in an 8k run or a 2k family friendly fun run/walk.  The 8k course takes runners through the 240-acre nature preserve, on trails and paved paths running alongside the Grand River, wetlands, woodlands, meadows and streams.  The 2k course is a flat, paved scenic mini-tour of the park, which is stroller-friendly.  To register, click here.

The Roselle Park River Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park.  The activities include live music, animals, hands-on activities and crafts, artwork, nature walks and children’s games and activities, as well as Monarch butterfly releases.  The event is free, but donations are appreciated.

Kent County will be accepting household hazardous waste from residents Saturday, September 21.

Residents with proper ID can drop off items from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 2350 Ivanrest SW in Grandville. The county will also accept drop-off items at the following times and locations:

  • October 12: 2908 Ten Mile Rd. in Rockford
  • October 26: 1500 Scribner Ave. NW, Grand Rapids

Chemicals including weed killers, bug sprays, antifreeze, gasoline, oil-based paint, wood preservatives, paint thinner, pool chemicals, deck cleaners, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermometers and thermostats will all be accepted.  Latex paint, medical waste, prescription drugs, ammunition and fireworks are prohibited.

Local businesses among the '101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies'

More than two dozen West Michigan companies are among the “101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies” in Michigan.

The annual list was released September 11, one week before the award celebration at Davenport University.  The 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies list celebrates organizations that inspire and produce green technology, positively impacting the industry and environment.  An independent research firm selected the winning companies based on the following categories: education, communication, strategic planning and operational implementation, innovation and problem solving, building and grounds, community leadership, workforce and financial performance.

Construction nears completion at Roselle Park

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich.—Another stage of construction at Roselle Park is nearing completion.

Workers are expected to finish improvements to the playground area around the silos within a few weeks.  They already completed a new parking area and entrance earlier this summer. The new entryway is located off Grand River Drive NE, directly across from the Michigan Street Entrance.

Roselle Park, located at 1010 Grand River Dr. NE, features 240 acres of nature preserve with a paved main trail. A river outlook and canoe landing are being planned for the space, as well as an environmentally friendly portable toilet.  The park space was formerly home to the Ada Beef Company.

Three-county campaign to Take the Stairs kicks off September 3

Organizations in Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties are teaming up this week to encourage people to take the stairs.

Take the Stairs Week runs September 3 through September 6.  The three-day campaign is meant to encourage people to become more physically active while saving energy.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, graphic designs promoting healthy behavior have been shown to motivate stair users; that’s why Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University created images for this campaign.  Free color signs are available at the Heart of West Michigan United Way for businesses and organizations with escalators or elevators.
