Ada girl will judge Michigan state parks ice cream contest

ADA, MI - An 8-year old girl from Ada Township will be one of three kids who will help judge the entries for the official Pure Michigan flavor of Michigan state parks ice cream.   Lexi Loehfelm of Ada and the other two youths have the honor of becoming judges because they have been named “Outdoor Outstanding Kids” by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR news release says:

This campaign was designed to recognize Michigan youth who have shown exemplary support of outdoor recreation, natural resources stewardship and the perpetuation of play and/or green spaces in their communities. This year, the DNR recognized three kids who have taken their love of the outdoors to a whole new level! The original intent of the campaign was to find judges for the “Create a Flavor” contest, but the DNR believes Outstanding Outdoor Kids will become an annual recognition campaign for amazing kids in three age groups: 8-11, 12-14 and 15-18.

In addition to judging the “Create a Flavor” contest, each Outstanding Outdoor Kid will receive:

  • Certificate of recognition
  • Hudsonville gift certificate
  • Free week of camping at Michigan state parks and recreation areas
  • Meijer gift card

Lexi Loehfelm of Ada won in the Ages 8-11 category.

Lexi Loehfelm has led her family and friends on countless adventures through woods, ponds and fields with butterfly net and bug houses in hand. At age 8, Lexi started the Happy Wags Pet Club to help dog owners provide their pooches with an opportunity to get outdoors and exercise during the day. A student at Goodwillie Environmental School, she recently started the Joyful Sunshine Kids Club, which aims to generate income from recyclable materials to provide basic needs for less fortunate children. Lexi has already gathered and returned more than 1,000 soda cans to purchase 100+ new books for students in a neighboring community.

The other winners are Noah Ekdom of Roscommon and Jimmy McGrath of Carleton.

The ice cream judging will take place on Tuesday, February 21 at the Meijer store at 13000 Middlebelt Road  in Livonia.  The judging will take place 6pm – 6:45pm.
