'Gobble Wobble' organizers hope to top last year's donation

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Thousands of people are expected to break a sweat this Thanksgiving to help feed children in need.

This is the sixth year for the "Gobble Wobble," presented by Gazelle Sports.  The 4.1 mile fun run begins at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day at East Grand Rapids Middle School.   The  “Widdle Wobble,” a one mile run for children, kicks off at 8:05 a.m.

The group awarded Wondergem their Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award during the 27th annual National Philanthropy Day at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park on November 12.

Registration open for 'Gobble Wobble'

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Registration is now open for people who want to break a sweat on Thanksgiving to help feed children in need.

This is the sixth year for the "Gobble Wobble," presented by Gazelle Sports.  The event takes place on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, at 8 a.m. at East Grand Rapids Middle School.

The adult event is a 4.1 mile fun run; children can take part in a 1 mile “Widdle Wobble.”  Last year, more than 2,000 people started off their holiday with the Gobble Wobble, raising $10,000 for Kids’ Food Basket, a non-profit organization focused on ending childhood hunger.

“It’s fun to see the community come together to take part in this event,” says Ashley Abbott, outreach and development coordinator for Kids’ Food Basket.

'Dolphin Tale' inspiration to visit West Michigan

A man portrayed by actor Morgan Freeman is coming to West Michigan.

World-renown prosthetist Kevin Carroll will visit Hanger Clinic October 29 to show local amputees what’s available to them now, as well as potential future advancements.  The free event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Carroll was portrayed by Freeman in the film “Dolphin Tale,” which was about a dolphin regaining the ability to swim using a prosthesis after losing its tail in a crab trap. Caroll has been an American Board Certified prosthetist for more than 30 years.  He’s appeared on Dateline, 20/20, CBS Early Show, NBC Nightly News, ABC’s Good Morning America and the Discovery Channel.

Rockford couple honored by Arthritis Foundation, Michigan

A Rockford couple’s work to help those with arthritis will come full circle October 8, as they are honored during the Arthritis Foundation’s Tribute to Excellence event at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Dan and Lou Ann Gaydou became advocates for those with arthritis after a previous Tribute to Excellence event, where they met a Grand Valley State University student battling juvenile arthritis.  Since then, their work has included several years on the Tribute to Excellence event committee and garnering more support for the Arthritis Foundation.

 “Arthritis is a terrible disease,” says Dan. “Lou Ann and I are thrilled to be honored and even more pleased that we have this special opportunity to further help people with arthritis.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Meijer) – Meijer, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based supercenter chain, announced today that it is partnering with Priority Health, Michigan's leading health plan, to raise awareness and help customers obtain information regarding their options as open enrollment for health insurance begins under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). 

The Michigan-based entities have unveiled a Health Reform and You! website at http://www.meijer.com/aca and are also providing informational brochures for customers at 203 Meijer pharmacy locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
