UPDATE: Man missing, barefoot & covered in mud
News

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Authorities and people who know a missing Kent County man say he was likely intoxicated the night he went missing.

Robert Nylen, 62, was last seen Saturday night; first, leaving Pauly's, a party and liquor shop along M-21 in Lowell Township, then, walking barefoot into a wooded and swampy area near Buttrick Ave. and Bolt St. in Cascade Township.

Kent County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Eric Rakow says they are concerned for Nylen's well being because he appeared drunk and disoriented. They also say he may have crossed the Grand River in a kayak, which he has done often. Authorities also recovered his shoes.

A ground search took place Sunday, but efforts were scaled Monday to a one boat search by the Kent County Sheriff's Department Marine Patrol.

Sgt. Rakow says they've received so many tips, most of which are nowhere near Nylen was last seen, so they halted the ground search. The marine boat scaled the entire Grand River. Family and friends also searched on their own, by ground and canoe.

An employee who works at Pauly's says Nylen appeared drunk when he came in Saturday night and tried to buy alcohol. Eric Westbrook says the store made the decision three weeks ago to stop selling Nylen alcohol, but he came in three times this week attempting to do so.

Westbrook says Nylen is a mild-mannered, nice man, but lately, wasn't the man they knew.

"He would never cause problems. Even the last few weeks when we knew he was going through his issues, he's always been mild-mannered and I think one day he just snapped," said Westbrok.

Westbrok says the store owners know Nylen well and have been out searching for him all day Monday.

Sgt. Rakow says he lives alone, and has a girlfriend and sister who helped search over the weekend.

Nylen is six-feet tall with a slim build and light blond hair. He was last seen covered in mud. He was wearing blue jeans but had no shoes on.

Anyone with information in this case, is asked to call the Kent County Sheriff's Department at (616) 632-6100 or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.
