The city of Grand Rapids is building the first elevated water tower in 20 years. The elevated storage tank is under construction near the corner of Patterson Avenue and 33rd Street in Kentwood. It will serve the communities of Cascade and Kentwood.
The $2.4 million tank is designed to reduce the load on the Grand Rapids pumping system. The water tower can hold 1.5 million gallons of water. It will be 180 feet tall when it’s completed. Workers have already built the concrete base, the steel tower, and nearly a third of the top tank. It is expected to be completed in September 2013.
The Grand Rapids water system serves 280,000 customers in Grand Rapids and seven nearby communities. The system has four elevated water towers and nine underground and ground-level tanks.
