In Memory of Lucas

In Memory of Lucas

It’s been more than three months since Forest Hills Central student, Lucas Van Sprange, died while running to a school bus stop. A make shift memorial still marks the location where the 15 year old was killed on January 16, 2015.

A family member had dropped him off in the center turn lane in front of the Manchester Hills subdivision. He was struck by a SUV as he crossed Cascade Road.

Three months later a wreath, cross, plants, balloons and a sign make up a memorial at the bus stop. The sign directs people to this blog “Live Like Lucas”. His mother, Melissa Conner, still shares the pain of losing her son.

April 3, 2015 - “Love is so powerful…the more you love someone, they say, the more you will grieve them. Loving someone is taking that chance. Giving them your whole heart with that possibility that the unthinkable will happen.”

Meijer Gardens celebrates 20 years, new sculpture

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) – The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park celebrated its 20th anniversary Monday with the dedication of a new statue: a large-scale piece named the Iron Tree.

The sculpture is composed of 99 distinct iron pieces, cast from individual trees in China and held together by stainless steel bolts. According to Joseph Becherer, vice president and chief curator at Meijer Gardens, the installation is representative of dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's commentary on globalism.

"It's really about how we as individuals have our own identity, but we come together as a community… we come together as a world," Becherer said.

Animal rights group protests GFS

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A national animal rights group protested Gordon Food Service in the Grand Rapids area today.

Last month, Mercy for Animals launched a harsh video campaign against GFS, even using popular actress Pamela Anderson to get its message out.

The group has been pressuring the Grand Rapids-based company to find a new supplier for its chicken ever since claims surfaced last month that hidden camera video shows the mistreatment of animals at an animal plant that supplies GFS.

Mercy for Animals has been circulating video claiming it shows sick and diseased birds arriving at Wayne Farms slaughterhouse in North Carolina, where they say most are abused before being killed. Wayne Farms is a major supplier for GFS.
