Allegiant: Court order should block pilot strike

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Following the threat of pilots going on strike, Allegiant Air says it has secured a court order that should prevent that.

The strike was threatened to take place during spring break, the busiest travel time at Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

The Teamsters Local 1224 notified Allegiant Air on Wednesday it intends to take labor action against the company.

Following word of a possible strike, Allegiant said a possible strike could disrupt holiday travel plans at all of its destinations. Later Wednesday evening, Allegiant released the following statement:

We are pleased to report that Allegiant have been successful in receiving a court order to stop the Teamsters intended strike. We have every reason to believe that the Teamsters will honor the court's instructions, and we will operate our weekend schedule as planned.

My Town: Kent ISD Board names new superintendent

KENT COUNTY, Mich.-- The search for Kent Intermediate School District's next leader is over.

Grandville Superintendent Ron Caniff will replace Kevin Konarska, who is retiring.  Caniff was the lone finalist left after West Ottawa Superintendent Tom Martin withdrew his application for the job.  Caniff's final interview with the Kent ISD Board was held Tuesday.

“The Board is thrilled to welcome Ron Caniff as the next leader of Kent ISD,” said Kent ISD School Board President Claudia Bajema. “He brings 15 years of experience and the strong support of his peers.

“We are confident that the transition from Kevin to Ron will be very smooth, and that Ron will lead with the talent, energy, and interpersonal skills that we have enjoyed for the past nine years under Kevin’s leadership. We also wish Kevin all the best in the next phase of his life,” she added.

Donation helps put more AEDs in schools

CASCADE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Thanks to a large donation, three West Michigan schools will be equipped with automated external defibrillators to help in emergencies.

The West Michigan Officials Association presented a $4,000 donation Monday night to the Wes Leonard Heart Team.

In 2011, 16-year-old Wes Leonard collapsed on the basketball court and died from cardiac arrest, due to an enlarged heart.

His mother receive the donation from the WMOA Monday night.

WMOA's Brad Brunet said cardiac emergencies can happen to anyone at a sporting event, and the AEDs could save lives.

"It could affect a coach, it could affect an official, it could affect a fan, a player, at any of these contests," Brunet said, "so we figure the more these AEDs are in these schools, the better off everybody's going to be."
