New cafe brings Manna to Forest Hills

FOREST HILLS, Mich.—A new café bringing nearly 30 jobs to the area is now serving up breakfast and lunch in Forest Hills.

Manna Café officially opened its doors Christmas Eve.  The 3,800-square-foot business is located at 850 Forest Hills Avenue SE, in the Forest Hills Retail Center. 

Former Amway executive Craig Witcher and his wife Julie opened the café with a mission to create a God-honoring place of acceptance and warmth.  The Café offers locally sourced food and dishes created in house.

IHOP preps patrons for Pancake Bowl

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—IHOP is getting in on the bowl season by hosting its first ever Pancake Bowl.

With the return of all you can eat pancakes at IHOP, participating restaurants are inviting patrons to join a pancake eating contest.  Those interested can enter the competition by ordering all you can eat pancakes at a participating IHOP restaurant now through Jan. 26.  The patrons who down the most buttermilk pancakes will earn a spot on the Pancake Bowl leader board.  The top scoring pancake eater at reach restaurant will receive bragging rights and free pancakes for one year.

On Feb. 1, the top 10 pancake eaters in the Grand Rapids area will compete in the Pancake Bowl.  The winner will receive a $500 IHOP gift card.

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—The Kent District Library is putting the “pub” in public library starting next month.

With the growing popularity of the craft beer industry in West Michigan, KDL decided to begin offering free home brewing classes, brewery tours, brewery book discussions and beer tastings in January and February 2014.

KENTWOOD, Mich.—Travelers at Gerald R. Ford International Airport can now get a taste of West Michigan’s craft brewing industry.

The vice president of Bell’s Brewery and other business leaders held a ribbon cutting ceremony  Dec. 18 to celebrate two new airport restaurants: Bell’s Brewhouse and Greens.  Both businesses are operated by HMSHost and located before the security screening portion of the airport.

Greens offers personalized salads created with fresh incredients, including a variety of greens, vegetables, cheeses and meats.

Besides offering the company's award-winning craft beers, Bell's Brewhouse has its own cafe menu featuring dishes like pork tacos and soft bretzels with beer mustard.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---Experience Grand Rapids, the official destination marketing organization for Kent County, recently announced the launch of its new personalized travel planning website, www.GRCityTwist.com.

The new interactive website targets 18 different interests, from “art lovers” to “thrill seekers”, allowing the visitor to customize their trip.  For example, craft beer enthusiasts can find breweries to explore, activities and nightlife related to craft beer, and accommodations for the weekend.

EXGR launched the new, mobile-friendly website on Dec. 17 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park with the hospitality community, business and political leaders, and its Certified Tourism Ambassadors.

Kent County honors cleanest restaurants with Food Safety Awards

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—Where are the safest places to eat in Kent County?

The county health department is answering that question with the 2013 Food Safety Awards.   The agency whittled down the list of 1,654 eligible restaurants to just 269 facilities, based on routine restaurant and food service inspections over the past year.  Under the county’s criteria, restaurants that earn the award must have a certified food safety manager, no confirmed violations of the Michigan Smoke Free Law and no confirmed foodborne illness outbreaks during the year.

UPDATE: West Ottawa celebrates 'Spirit Bracket Challenge' victory

HOLLAND, Mich.-- Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar will reward the winner of its “Spirit Bracket Challenge” November 5.

The restaurant organized the friendly fundraising competition as a way to promote school spirit while helping a dozen local schools raise money for classroom supplies and school activities.

Kenowa Hills 6th grade/Alpine Elementary and West Ottawa High School were the last two competitors standing, besting ten other schools in the Teriyaki 12 and Spicy 6 fundraising rounds.  In the end, West Ottawa won the Flamin’ Finals.  In addition to the funds students raised throughout the competition, West Ottawa will get an additional $2,500 from Buffalo Wild Wings.  The school will be rewarded with a special check during its celebratory pep rally Tuesday, November 5.

“We were so lucky to have 12 upbeat and enthusiastic schools compete in th
