Fundraiser September 22 for scholarship in honor of late chef

A fundraiser to establish a scholarship fund in honor of Chef Mark Noseda will take place September 22.

Noseda passed away August 16, a day before the soft opening of Freighters in Port Huron.  Noseda was an executive chef for Meritage Hospitality Group, which includes Twisted Rooster in My Town Ada/Cascade and Crooked Goose in My Town Walker. He was 35 years old.

A scholarship fund in Noseda’s name is being established to support culinary students attending Grand Rapids Community College’s Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.  Sunday's fundraiser will run from noon to 3 p.m.  at Amore Trattoria Italiana Restaurant, located at 5080 Alpine Ave.

ADA, Mich.—Learn clay/skeet shooting while helping West Michigan youth during a Salvation Army fundraiser September 18.

This is the third year for The Salvation Army’s Sporting Clay Shoot at the Kent County Conservation Club, located at 8460 Conservation Rd. NE in Ada.

For a $250 donation, participants get a lesson, a chance to shoot clay pigeons and a filet mignon dinner at the Kent County Conservation Club.  Proceeds from the event will go to The Salvation Army Outdoors, which provides camping experiences for underprivileged children from West Michigan.

Calder Cup to appear at two local restaurants

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The Calder Cup is so well traveled, it could put George Clooney’s character in ‘Up in the Air’ to shame.

After making numerous stops, the Calder Cup will visit East Grand Rapids Thursday, along with Griffins Head Coach Jeff Blashill.

Blashill will accompany the cup to Ramona’s Table, located at 2232 Wealthy St. SE for a 12:30 p.m. appearance.  Hockey fans are invited to visit during their lunch hour.

If you can’t make it out Thursday, mark your calendar for September 13.  The Calder Cup will be on display at the Uccello’s on East Beltline from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Four more chefs are needed to help with a scholarship fundraiser in honor of the late Chef Mark Noseda .

New bakery honored for tasty airline creation

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—  A new bakery in East Grand Rapids has earned a sky-high honor.

Cakabakery’s creation for Southwest Airlines’ inaugural event at Gerald R. Ford International Airport has been named “Cake of the Week” by Anna-Aero, an airline network and news analysis website.

The cake was presented Sunday, August 11, when Southwest began service out of Grand Rapids.  The dessert was designed by Jason Kakabaker, owner of Cakabakery, located at 1436 Wealthy St. SE.  Kakabaker was recently featured on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” where he finished second.
