Forest Hills boasts five new members to the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America-Eagle

CASCADE, Mich. (WZZM) - Five young men from the Forest Hills area will be honored Saturday, February 19th for reaching the highest rank there is in Boy Scouts of America.

Patrick and John Donovan, both 14, along with Adam Pratt, 14, are freshman at Forest Hills Central High School. Michael Asberg, 15, is a freshman at Forest Hills Northern, and Alex Pavey, 14, is a freshman at Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

The five will attend their Eagle Court of Honor Saturday at the Gerald Ford Museum. All five young men are from "Troop 345" in Cascade.

One of the major requirements for earning the rank of Eagle is the leadership Project. Each Scout must plan and supervise other Scouts in a project that benefits the community.

After the completion of all required badges, and the leadership project, Scouts then face a board for review. All five of these young men achieved the highest rank afforded by the Boy Scouts of America during this the 100th year of Scouting.

Snowshoe fundraiser on tap for Forest Hills Eastern High School

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - The Physical Education Department at Forest Hills Eastern High School is sponsoring the 2011 "Snowshoe Stampede" which is set to unfold on Saturday, February 19th at the high school (2200 Pettis St.).

Check-in is set for 9 a.m. and the first race is scheduled for 10 a.m.

The number of races will be determined by the number of participants registered. The course will start and end on the practice soccer fields.

The event is open to the public. The entry fee for the race is $10. All the proceeds will go to the physical education department at FHE for future equipment needs.

Snowshoes are available to rent for $2.

Throughout the first semester, Eastern High's Leadership class has initiated several community enrichment projects. One of the biggest projects was to help Kids Food Basket (KFB). KFB serves the Greater Grand Rapids Community by providing sack lunches to "food insecure" students in schools throughout Kent County. They provide high calorie lunches according to Government guidelines to close to 4,000 students daily.

The Leadership class organized sales of window clings and "Helping Hands".

Forest Hills Staff Fitness Challenge to Benefit the P.O.R.T  Team at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital

CASCADE, Mich. (WZZM) - The Forest Hills staff members are beating the winter blahs with a little friendly "walking" competition that will benefit the Pediatric Oncology Research Team at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

Forest Hills Northern head athletic trainer, Patty Sellner has coordinated the "Healthy Husky" walking teams.

The walking event is currently underway, and will go until February 20th.

There are 33 teams of five, from Northern High, Northern Middle School, Northern Trails, Central Middle and the administration office. The goal is to hit the 10,000 steps a day mark.

Last year, this event raised $1,000 for the YMCA Healthy U program. This year the Center for Physical Rehabilitation has given the Forest Hills staff a lead donation of $1,000 and challenged the Healthy Huskies to raise an additional $1,000.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - Forest Hills Northern High School senior, Emilee Ritz was selected as a finalist in the Gerald R. Ford Essay Challenge. Emilee is recognized as one of the tp 18 stident-writers from all schools in Kent County.

She will be honored in a ceremony at the Gerald R. Ford Museum on Monday, February 21st.

During the ceremony, the finalists will be recognized and presented with a certificate. Also, the winners of the contest will be announced, the top essays will be read, and prizes will be awarded.

Central Woodlands Fifth Grader Advances to State Finals in Elks National Hoop Shoot Competition

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - Central Woodlands fifth grader Tyler George was one of ten competitors (at his age level) competing at the Elks National Hoop Shoot Competition held at Mona Shores High School in Muskegon on Janyary 29th.

Tyler hit 24 out of 25 free throws advancing him to the state finals of the National Elks Hoop Shoot Competition, which will be held in Grand Rapids later this month.

This is the third time Tyler is competing at the state finals. In 2010, he won the state to move on to the Midwest Regionals in Indiana.
