FHPS - Going green scores financial savings, local and national recognition

From: http://www.fhps.us

In July 2006, Forest Hills Public Schools entered into an energy savings program in cooperation with Energy Education Incorporated. The emphasis of the program was to reduce consumption of natural gas, electricity, and water. The district provided building guidelines and procedures to accomplish this task. Since the program began four years ago, the district has avoided $2.6 million in utility costs.

The 2007 bond issue included addressing long-term infrastructure issues, and the district incorporated energy efficiency as part of the renovation process. We have updated gym lights in all buildings, replaced parking lot lights with LED lights, and added occupancy sensors to many areas including bathrooms, storage spaces, offices, and classrooms.

Two Forest Hills Schools Participate in ArtPrize

From: http://www.fhps.us

Students from two Forest Hills Schools will have their works displayed in this years ArtPrize festival.

During the 2009-2010 school year, fifth grade students at Goodwillie Environmental School constructed a 24' birch bark voyageur style canoe with Native American consultant Kevin Finney. Using primitive tools, students fashioned the canoe out of birch bark and split cedar logs, and used spruce roots to bind it together.

Forest Hills School District construction

A number of Forest Hills schools underwent some major renovations over the summer. These projects mark the end of $15 million worth of work at 13 locations. All of the projects were funded by a 2007 bond issue.

The majority of the 2010 work took place at Meadowbrook Elementary and Pine Ridge Elementary, with smaller projects at other schools.

FHPS Fine Arts Center Presents The B-52s

From: http://www.fhfineartscenter.com

The B-52s have come a long way since their revolutionary 1979 self-titled debut, featuring the popular hit, Rock Lobster. In 1989, the group returned with their smash Cosmic Thing, which spawned the Top 10 hits Love Shack and Roam. Looking back at the band’s pioneering fusions of punk, new wave, and vintage rock, it would be tough to imagine the contemporary musical landscape without having encountered the intersected spirits of Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland, and Cindy Wilson.

The B-52s is the first event of our 2010-2011 Performance Season. Season tickets are available to new subscribers starting Monday, August 2nd through Friday, September 23, 2010. Call the Fine Arts Center Box Office at (616) 493-8966.
