Gymco offers free membership to military families

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A Grand Rapids gymnastics studio is offering a special perk for military families- free membership for the rest of the year.

Gymco, Inc. recently announced the special deal for active duty service members and their immediate families.

“As the daughter of a military hero, I understand the sacrifice and commitment of our military families,” said Doreen Bolhuis, Gymco’s founder and president. “By offering a free membership, we can recognize and thank military families in our community. We also hope to inspire other businesses and community members to discover their own unique way to support military families.”

To redeem the offer, service members must show a military I.D.  Memberships are valid through 12/31/2014.  Members of Gymco receive discounts on all programming, including birthday parties, open gym times, special events, preschool, drop-in daycare and gymnastics classes.

ADA, Mich.--Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp will host a free dance master class and summer camp dance scholarship auditions on Sunday, January 19, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The class and auditions will take place at West Michigan Youth Ballet, 6086 Rippling, in Ada. Students should arrive 30 minutes early and bring a photo of themselves in first arabesque position.

Cross-country skiing workshop Jan. 11

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich.—With more than a foot of fresh snow throughout most of West Michigan, it’s a perfect time to learn how to cross-country ski.

The Ada Township Parks and Recreation Department will offer a introductory workshop this Saturday, Jan. 11.  Participants will learn about the necessary equipment and techniques to cross-country ski before heading out into Roselle Park to try it out, with the guidance of a coach.

The workshop is $5 for adults and $3 for youth, not including equipment rentals.   Rentals are available locally at Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus, located at 1200 E. Paris.   Participants can also bring their own skis.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---Experience Grand Rapids, the official destination marketing organization for Kent County, recently announced the launch of its new personalized travel planning website, www.GRCityTwist.com.

The new interactive website targets 18 different interests, from “art lovers” to “thrill seekers”, allowing the visitor to customize their trip.  For example, craft beer enthusiasts can find breweries to explore, activities and nightlife related to craft beer, and accommodations for the weekend.

EXGR launched the new, mobile-friendly website on Dec. 17 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park with the hospitality community, business and political leaders, and its Certified Tourism Ambassadors.

Parents are encouraged to ditch the sitter and bring their children to Grand Rapids Gymnastics Saturday, Dec. 14 for Parent's Night Out.

Children ages four and up will have the opportunity to play games, learn gymnastic skills, take part in a holiday craft, enjoy a movie and best of all, visit Santa. The little elves should wear athletic attire. No jeans, snaps, zippers, buttons or jewelry are allowed.  Long hair should be tied back.

Cascade Township approves road closures for 2014 race

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich.—  The Grand Rapids Triathlon will return next year, and so will the road closures.

During its regular meeting November 20, the Cascade Township Board approved shutting down a portion of Thornapple River Drive, Grachen Street, Mountain Ash Street, Hurley Street, Peace Street, Orange Avenue and Orange Court from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 8.

Tris4Health says the Grand Rapids Triathlon 2014 will stretch from Cascade to Ada Township and Lowell Township.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Kids’ Food Basket, which provides sack suppers to thousands of children each day.
