Cascade video rental store shuts down

Cascade video rental store shuts down

The Family Video store on 28th Street SE in Cascade has closed its doors and removed all of its inventory from the store.  A sign posted on the door said, “we are sad to close our location on 28th Street TOMORROW, April 26th.”  Family Video asked that all rentals be returned by midnight on Monday, April 27th.  The sign encouraged customers to visit their three closest Family Video locations in Kentwood, Wyoming and Fuller Avenue in Grand Rapids.  Family Video has more than 775 stories in 19 states.

This is the second major movie rental store to close in Cascade in the last several years.

Teen bonds with new service dog

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A Forest Hills teen whose first service dog died suddenly from cancer is gaining his independence with help from a new dog.

Nick Ackerman, 18, is a senior at Forest Hills Central. He and his service dog Troy take the bus to school every day.

Nick was born with TAR syndrome, a condition that affects the long bones in the body. Troy will be carrying Nick's backpack and everything he needs for school. He's also been trained to pick up Nick, should he fall over. Troy has been learning his job well.

Nick has already bonded with Troy. Late last year, we told you about Nick and his first service dog Nico. Nico had been on the job with Nick for about a week when the young Dutch shepherd was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Nico was euthanized the next day.

"We could see he was in pain," Nick said. "I didn't want to see him like that. It sucked."

Bring your phones to the theater for #TrailerTweetUp

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Normally, if you bring your phone to the Celebration! Cinema North, you would be kicked out.

But Tuesday night, you can use your phone during the MLive Trailer TweetUp. Celebration! Cinema North will show summer blockbuster trailers and movie enthusiasts will be asked to share their thoughts on what they're seeing by using the #trailertweetup on Twitter.

The idea was created a couple of years ago. At Celebration! Cinema North, they do it twice a year: once for summer blockbusters and once for holiday movies.

There will be fun giveaways, as well, organizers said. The event is free, starts at 7 p.m., and will last about 90 minutes.

Rainbow Child Care Center Introduces Kids for Canines Program to Support Animals in Need

Each year thousands of animals are surrendered to local Humane Society shelters in Michigan. These Humane Society shelters rely solely on donations to sustain their operations, making the need for essential pet supplies substantial.

To aid these animals in need, Rainbow Child Care Center, a leading early childhood education provider, is introducing its Kids for Canines program. Rainbow is teaming up with humane societies across the state, including the Humane Society of West Michigan locally, to collect essential pet supplies for dogs waiting to be placed in their loving forever homes.
